South Border
is a Filipino Pop and R&B band formed in the 90s who gained recognition in the music scene in the 2000s. Having undergone several permutations in its long career, South Border has nevertheless retained its unique sound and musical sensibility and has even moved up along the current global trends in music. Hence, retaining the top spot in their particular musical genre. Much credit goes to musical director and lead creative genius Jay Durias, the staunchest unifying force that has kept the band and its music alive and thriving.

The band, whose name is a tribute to their roots in Davao down south, first came into national prominence in 1996 when they launched their first self-titled album. It included a Jimmy Antiporda song entitled â€œMay Pag-Ibig Pa Kayaâ€™ which they interpreted in the Metro Manila Pop Music Festival earlier that year. Another song, â€œKahit Kailanâ€ was awarded 1996 Song of the Year by various radio stations, thus giving them their first big hit.

The following year, the album reached gold, then platinum. South Border was all set for their first major concert at the Araneta Coliseum. As expected, thousands of their new found fans trooped to fill the massive dome to the brim. Before the end of 1997, the exceptional talents of South Border was recognized by their peers in the industry when they bagged the most number of trophies at the 10th AwitAwards including Best Performance by a New Duo or Group, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Produced Record of the Year for their hit song, â€œKahit Kailanâ€. By the end of 1997, their debut album has gone triple platinum and South Border was a certified star band.

Not long after that, in the midst of a flourishing career, South Border found itself in the eye of a storm which called for a conspicuous change in their lineup. Luke Mejares replaced Brix Ferraris on lead vocals. But despite discouraging forecasts, South Border got back on their feet in no time. In a rush of creative adrenaline, the band doubled their efforts to finish their second album called Bump! It featured â€œSa â€˜Yoâ€ a haunting ballad that spoke of a heartâ€™s yearning for a loved one and â€œReborn,â€ South Borderâ€™s first attempt at recording an instrumental piece reminiscent of their early jazz influences. In 1999, South Border once again caught the critical eye and bagged a total of 12 Katha Music awards including Record of the Year, Best Pop Song, and Best R&B Songâ€”all for â€œSa â€˜Yoâ€. The following year, the band released its first live recording which was well-received by their fans and drew rave reviews from critics. At the turn of the new millennium, the band once again made waves with the success of â€œHabang Atin ang Gabiâ€ the theme song from La Vida Rosa a Rossana Roces-Diether Ocampo film. The lyrics were written by scriptwriter Armando Lao and the music was composed by Jay Durias, who considers this song to be one of his best compositions and arrangements to date.

The same song became the carrier single for their fourth album, The Way We Do released in 2001. In November of the same year, South Border staged their biggest major show at the 30,000-seater PSC Track and Field Oval. But in the final quarter of 2002, another surprise jolted South Borderâ€™s avid followers: the announcement that Luke was leaving the band to go solo. The search for his replacement was going to be another grueling task.

Having gone through another major change in their lead vocals lineup, the band scored a major win when they got not one but two astonishing vocal talents in Vince Alaras and Duncan Ramos. 26-year old Vince, was a member of La Salleâ€™s Kundirana and was then known as â€œthe boy who sounded like Brian McKnight". The younger Duncan on the other hand was a child prodigy â€” a singing and dancing wonder boy who often accompanied Gary Valenciano in his shows and tours allover the country.

The two new talents who danced as well as they sang, provided a fresh and youthful take on South Border which has since then came up with the current hits we all hear on the radio and even on television today. The biggest of which is perhaps â€œRainbowâ€ which first hit the airwaves in 2003 for the promotion of megastar Sharon Cunetaâ€™s Metro Manila Film Festival entry, Crying Ladies. South Borderâ€™s music even dominated television with their song â€œIkaw Ngaâ€ â€”the love theme from the phenomenal hit TV series Mulawin. In 2004, the band released their first album under their own independent label. Episode III was a gigantic commercial success that included hits â€œThe Showâ€ and â€œBrown Hand Smashâ€ â€” two songs that gave the group an edgier, danceable R&B sound.

The Profile of a Nightingale

She never planned to be a professional singer. She simply loves to sing, and boy, can she sing! With the voice of an angel cascading up and down the scales like a roller coaster, a full three octaves of heavenly music, full throated, full chested and fully seasoned, she can sing a song as few others can. Born into a musical family, with parents who are operatic singers, Lani grew up immersed in song, with siblings similarly endowed with wonderful voices. Growing up and listening to the radio, she expanded her musical horizons to various genres and styles, and developed a dynamic versatility.
Lani can easily shift from ballad to pop rock and even jazz. She may even surprise you with a sudden burst of operatic aria in a seasoned soprano voice. Recording multiplex tapes of the songs of great singers, she can, with alacrity, imitate the voice and style of, among others, Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, and even Barbra Streisand.Lani has been in and out of the music scene since the late 1980s-as a vocalist in various bands, as a soloist in the lounge and hotel circuits, as singer for commercial jingles and multiplex tapes. It is amazing to note that although she stopped singing professionally for periods of time, opportunities never cease to come knocking at her door. It seems that music is her destiny.
In 1996, she recorded an album with the carrier single, "Somebody Warm Like Me," which became an instant hit. Moving to Viva Records in 1999, she did the album "Tunay Na Mahal" with the carrier single of the same title and the hit song "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me". Playing the lead role in S.K. Productions mega-musical play "Rama at Sita", she received accolades for her singing and acting prowess.She kick-started the year 2000 with a new album, entitled "All Heart"-- a collection of love songs led by it's carrier single "One More Time", by Dodjie Simon. The album also includes songs written by some of today's most acclaimed contemporary composers, like Vehnee Saturno, Jimmy Borja and Trina Belamide.
The year 2001 became a very blessed year for Lani. She became a semi-regular host in the Sunday noontime show SOP, along with other top artists, Ogie Alcasid, Regine Velasquez, Janno Gibbs and Jaya. In September 2001, she had her first major concert at the Araneta Coliseum called, "Lani Misalucha, The Crossover Live Tour". It was a highly successful concert, the venue of which Lani filled to the rafters, earned her more praises from fans and critics alike.In 2002, Lani continued to wow audiences with her breathtaking performances in her US Concert Tour and series of concerts at the Onstage in Greenbelt. Lani released her fourth studio album entitled, "Loving You" in June 2003 with the singles, "Tila" and "Malaya Ka Na". In November of that same year, she began hosting her own television show with actor and comedian Michael V., also known as his character Junie Lee, called "Celebrity Turns".
Lani is also the preferred choice of foreign artists who have come to Manila to perform. She was the special guest of music industry icons Kenny Loggins, Brian McKnight, Sergio Mendes & Stephen Bishop.
She continues to perform to SRO crowds wherever she goes, may it be hotels, schools and bigger venues, like the Main Theater Cultural Center of the Philippines and the PICC Plenary Hall. She has had successful concerts in Cebu, Bacolod, Baguio, Pampanga, Davao and everywhere else in the Philippines.
Lani sought and conquered the hearts of those in the United States, too, performing in Reno, San Diego, Washington, Las Vegas, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Mayor Willie L. Brown, Jr. of San Francisco even made August 17 "Lani Misalucha Day" to give due recognition to her talent as an artist.In 2004, Lani became the First Asian to headline in a Main Showroom of the Las Vegas Strip, performing with Hawaii's Premiere showband, Society of Seven at the world-famous Jubilee Theatre of the Bally's Hotel. The show received raving reviews and the highest acclaims from Vegas Critics, putting Lani's name high up on the list of Vegas' must-see performers.

As Las Vegas' New Diva and Siren of the Strip, Lani proved her status as an international artist of top calibre. JUST LIKE THEIR FIRST SINGLE - CUESHEÂ Just like their first single, "Stay," CueshÃ© defied the odds and struggles to be one of the biggest and most successful bands in the country today. In a span of one year, vocalist Jay Justiniani, guitarist and vocalist Ruben Caballero, bassist Fritz Labrado, lead guitarist Jovan Mabini, keyboardist Jhunjie Dosdos and drummer/band leader Mike Manaloto were thrown into a whirlwind of opportunities not any other new band had experienced. But their phenomenal success was not without its share of intrigues and controversies. Since their first single hit the airwaves, critics and detractors tagged them as another one hit wonder. Rock fundamentalists considered them a pariah, called them a "phony," and a "sell-out." Insults, below-the-belt comments, false allegations, flaks, they got it. CueshÃ© was clearly one of the most misunderstood bands. But as the old clichÃ© goes "you can't put a good man down." Despite the continuous dissing, hitting and criticism, the band remained steadfast, unaffected and concentrated on their music. As they say "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger." Indeed, they are proving their critics wrong. Proof: after "Stay" came "Sorry." Then "Ulan" followed by "Can't Let You Go" and "24 Hours." All these singles from their debut album "Half Empty, Half Full" became chart-toppers. Celebrities, non-celebrities, children and adults alike hum their songs. The album likewise sold thousands, achieving the double platinum mark. Not bad from an upstart act. Accolades poured in, headlined by their big win at the 1st MYX Music Awards, bagging three major victories (Favorite Artist, Favorite Group and Favorite Song-for the song "Stay.") out of four nominations. Viewers of musical variety show SOP voted the band as Best Breakthrough Artist in 2005 and this year as Band of the Year. CueshÃ© recently bagged the Smart Texters' Choice for Hitmaker of the Year Award at the 2006 MTV Pilipinas Awards. They also became known for their flawless performance onstage the reason why their gigs remained packed and well-attended. And the latest-a Philippines tour beginning September culminating with a major concert at the Araneta Coliseum next year. "Where we are right now, we owe it to the fans," Mike said. Fame might have brought about many changes but still, humility remains intact among the members, just the same during their struggle. Like the challenging years when Jay figured in an accident; to make ends meet, Mike sold cigarettes, Fritz drove a passenger jeepney with Jovan as his assistant. Or the moment they left Cebu and set foot in Manila, living in together in a small apartment surviving on canned goods and noodles. Next on their list, a follow-up to their top-selling album. Reflecting on the fast-paced events they experienced: "Everything happened so fast since we came to Manila. From recording our debut album to guestings, shows and gigs. Though we never really had time for ourselves, we got to know ourselves better," Ruben said. It is that self realization that the band decided to take it slow recording the second album. They carefully chose their gigs to fully concentrate on recording. Though difficult at the start, eventually ideas flowed and the music popped up naturally. With a plethora of experiences, it is not surprising the band was able to unload enough material for their second baby. It was indeed a celebration of their self-expression that they were inspired to call their latest musical gem "Back To Me." Collectively, it's about going back to where they have left off-then reaching out, mending, seeking relationships, committing, changing perspectives and letting go. Making decisions creative or otherwise by listening to their hearts. Evident is the cutting down of clutter, tamer guitar tracks, flowing melodies and seamless chord progressions. Likewise, it showcases their musical maturity. "This album is lighter and more laid-back compared to 'Half Empty, Half Full,'" Fritz said. In spite of these changes, tracks are distinguishingly CueshÃ©, in intensity and feel. It is more spontaneous with less clichÃ©. If in the previous album, Mike did most of the writing chores, this time, members made contributions, each expressing emotions and each with stories to tell. The title track "Back To Me," penned by Fritz, is about longing for someone who you wanted to come back because you feel he/she is the one who completes your life. It can also be about a failed relationship you never really want to give up. But what inspired Fritz to write the song is his wife. "I have been away from her for long due to the band's busy schedules and my wife has been missing me. I got some of the lyrics from her text messages. But we're okay now," Fritz said. Another one of his masterpiece is "Borrowed Time," a song about forbidden love. However, let it be known it is not about him. Relationships still comprise Mike's contributions--"I Won't Let You Down," "Today," "Missing You" and "I Do." Ruben proves he can not only belt out tunes but write as well with his two compositions-"All I Want" and "Broken Into Pieces." Both are inspired by the love of his life. "'All I Want' was about her sentiments. Sometimes she feels insecure and thinks I don't love her anymore. 'Broken Into Pieces' answers the lyrics of 'All I Want,'" Ruben said. Likewise, Jay expresses his feelings with "If You Need Me," a song about acceptance of a person on who he/she is. Though having difficulty speaking in Tagalog, Jovan was able to write two Tagalog songs "Bakit?" and "Pasensya Na." "I must admit I'm having a hard time conversing in Tagalog but I express myself better in that dialect through writing," Jovan said. He is also credited for the music in majority of the tracks in the album. Also featured in the album is their version of the John Lennon song "Jealous Guy." Done in acoustic, the song perfectly captures how passionate CueshÃ© is. "We have always been fans of John Lennon and the song describes us because like others we are jealous guys," Ruben said. CueshÃ© could not care any less of the pressure of living up to their previous albums success, the worry of a sophomore slump or the flak they will get from critics for they made music that reflects who the band is, not what is dictated to them or sticking to the tried-and-tested formula others fall into. "We are having fun despite the detractors. We know we can't please everybody. Remember the songs “Masdan Mo Ang Kapaligiran”, “Itanong Mo Sa Mga Bata”, “Ang Bayan Kong Sinilangan (Cotabato)” and “Pagbabalik”? These are all included in the very first album released by the legendary Pinoy-ethno-folk-rock band ASIN on September 1, 1978. This 2006, the front-woman behind this seminal folk group will be celebrating ASIN’s 28 years of music with a concert tour in the US.
This is a rare opportunity for all our “kababayans” in North America to finally hear the soulful voice of Ms. LOLITA CARBON. She is one of the remaining members of the ASIN quartet that originally included Mike “Nonoy” Pillora Jr., Alfredo “Pendong” Aban, Jr. and the late Cesar “Saro” Bañares, Jr. (the singer-composer of the song “Balita” which was adapted and turned into a hip-hop beat by the Black Eyed Peas entitled “The Apl Song” that was included in their Elephunk album). Up to this day, Lolita has continued to inspire us with songs that speak of love, peace, unity, children’s rights and environmental awareness.

Probably the best pinoy concert in Las Vegasfor the year 2006, kudos to the organizers ofthe concert: Intrinsically Safe BandEntertainment Services of Carson, California.
As the gates opened at 6:15 PM and the crowdstarted pouring in, video ads of the concertsponsors were displayed on the theatre giantTV screen while tracks from a Black Eyed Peas'album were playing as an acknowledgment to thepopular Filipino hip-hop artist APL's long-standing patronage of Asin.
A lady's voice was then heard on the PAreading a manifesto of Asin's philosophy of commitment to the environment and world peace.The frailty of her voice combined with thesocial relevance of the manifesto contentcaused a sudden quiet moment as the crowdintently listened to each word.
The concert proper started at 7:25 PM with a powerhouse of openning acts - local Las Vegaspinoy rock group "Veronica's Handkerchief","Las Vegas Pinoy Pop Superstar" winnerSamantha Mendoza, and veteran pinoy folksinger/songwriter Cholo with his newly-formed band " D ‘Ol Trade Jacks". By the timeCholo was on his last song ("Anting-anting")of his 5-song set the crowd was applaudingafter each line of verse. They were ready for ASIN !
First, the Asin backup band came in withouttheir frontman Lolita Carbon; all of themwearing various versions of Asin USA Tour2006 T-shirts. With Hermes Arriola on lead vocals , they rendered a song tribute (" Balong Malalim") to the grandfather rock group of the 70's "Juan dela Cruz" band .
Finally, the 'piece de resistance' of the evening, Lolita Carbon came on stage to thewild applause of the audience. At 49 years old,she looked stunning. Wearing a dark-coloredVersace kaftan ,black velvet jeans and sporting some golden steaks on her dark brownhair; she would feel comfortable next to anyLas Vegas Diva. She had a certain glow thatdisguised the rigors of months of touring Canada and the USA. Gone is the hippy Lolitaof 30 years ago fans are familiar with; wenow have a sophistcated and mature Lolita!
She started her repertoire with a successionof Asin's old hits which the audience immediately appreciated. "Masdan mo ang Kapaligiran" , "Himig ng Pag-ibig", "Usok","Cotabato" and so on ....Her body movements on stage reminded one ofMelissa Etheridge as she gracefully swung with her black Gibson jumbo acoustic guitar;her artistry comparable to Sheryl Crowe's. Combine these with the vocal dynamics ofBonnie Tyler, and you have Lolita. Her staminaand professionalism were unbelievable . Song after song of the 16-song set was deliveredwith undiminishing concentration and energy.
The Asin backup group was a formidable bunchof seasoned musicians. From the Philippines: Suky Kalaw on lead electric guitar. Emil Mahusay on bass, Howie Villareal on drums,and Tata Bondad on 12-string acoustic guitar.From the US, Dexter Javier, a session musician,played keyboards. Joey Maurillo ,also a studiosession musician, played second lead electricguitar; Joey, a former Asin guitarist is nowwith the US Navy but happened to be on leave.Hermes Arriola sang most of the backup vocals.Bernard Manuel, tour guide and photographer, did the vocals on "Cotabato".
The highest point of the concert musically perhaps is their rendition of "Ganyan Lang",a jazz-influenced song laden with diminishedchords. This gives us a glimpse on the possible future direction Lolita's music (and of course Asin's music) is taking. A very touching moment of the concert was whenshe (Lolita) remembered deceased Asin memberand co-songwriter of "Cotabato", Cesar "Saro" Banares Jr. who was killed in a politicallymotivated shooting in Mindanao in the mid-90s. At the end of the 16-song set, the audiencestill wanted more; Asin acknowledged with a very lively encore with some members of the audience joining the band on stage.
The applause and outpouring of love by theaudience was tremendous throughout the concert.Not surprisingly, since Asin has been part ofthe sountrack of our lives against the backdropof "interesting times" in Philippine politicalhistory ,such as the martial law era and the subsequent diaspora,the EDSA revolution,etc.
And above all, Asin has been one of the fewmusic groups who have not compromised theirartistry and integrity in favor of commercialism. Mabuhay ang Pilipino!
As the diverse crowd emptied the auditorium,one can sense a general feeling of satisfactionand pride. Asin has exceeded all expectations;the legend lives on.

The Pinoy Folk Rock Group was a big hit at the well-attended Carson, California Independence Day Celebration June 10, 2006. After their performance, a long line
of fans and well-wishers formed at the Asin booth tent. The next stop of the ASIN TOUR USA 2006 is San Pedro, California June 17.

Local Las Vegas rock band " Veronica's Hankerchief " confidently
sings pilipino ( tagalog ) lyrics in front of a largely non-filipino
crowd. The Veronica's Hankerchief repertoire is made up mostly
of their original songs in english or tagalog and a sprinkling
of cover tunes but delivered in their distinctive Hankerchief style.
The group members are lead vocalist Marlon Bollozos, bass player
Marcus Aurelius,guitarist Kevin Ball and drummer Peach Palima.
Veronica's Hankerchief will be one of the openning acts in the
forthcoming Las Vegas stop of the ASIN USA Tour 2006 at the Clark
